Sunn O))) HalfLife
A compact two-footswitch pedal from EarthQuaker Devices, made with Sunn O))), that combines an analog octave-up, an op-amp distortion with three clipping modes, and a clean MOSFET booster. It suits guitarists who run heavy, saturated tones into tube amps.

HalfLife is a smaller version of the Life Pedal circuit. The signal runs through an analog octave, then a distortion, then a booster. The distortion and the booster each have their own footswitch, so they can be used separately: the right switch controls the octave distortion and the left switch controls the booster.
The octave is a discrete full-wave rectifier at the input. It is monophonic and works best on single notes above the twelfth fret with the neck pickup. The distortion is based on a classic op-amp design and has a three-way clipping switch (OpAmp with no diodes, Asymmetric, Symmetric). A low-pass filter shapes the highs. The booster uses a MOSFET stage and is clean and high impedance, intended to push the preamp tubes of an amp harder.
An expression pedal can be plugged into the Octave EXP jack to control the octave blend. Both footswitches use relay-based true bypass with Flexi-Switch, which allows latching or momentary use. The pedal runs from a 9 V DC supply with a 2.1 mm negative-center barrel. Because the switching is relay-based, it needs power to pass signal.
