The KSM313/NE is a ribbon microphone with a figure-of-eight (bi-directional) polar pattern and strong rejection of sound arriving from the sides. Its two sides are voiced differently: one side gives a warm, full sound that works well with amplified instruments, while the other gives a brighter, more flattering character for close vocals. The microphone is turned around to choose between them.
The ribbon element is made from Roswellite, a proprietary material used in place of conventional foil ribbons. It is chosen for tensile strength, toughness and shape memory, so the ribbon holds up at very high sound pressure levels. The microphone handles up to 146 dB SPL across a 30 to 15,000 Hz range, which suits fast transients from vocals, acoustic instruments and concert halls.
The body is hand-assembled from machined steel, silver, gold and aluminum, with custom-sourced components aimed at presence and low signal loss. It ships with a ShureLock stand mount and a zippered carrying case.
