The TR-8 models the TR-808 and TR-909 using Analog Circuit Behavior technology, which recreates how each instrument responds when its controls are moved. It provides 16 kits built from 11 instrument types, including custom kits that mix 808 and 909 sounds. Tune and Decay controls are available on every instrument, and the bass drum and snare drum add extra controls such as Attack, Snappy and Comp.
Patterns are written on a 16-step sequencer that follows TR-REC behavior, with A/B variations, patterns of up to 32 steps and no separate record and play modes. Reverb, delay and side chain can be applied per step, and the external inputs can be mixed in and ducked. Scatter offers 10 types of real-time glitch, stutter, reverse and gate variations with an adjustable depth. Four roll types, per-instrument mutes, pattern copy and randomization support live playing. Version 1.1 added backup and restore, instrument levels, pattern lock and expanded MIDI control.
The TR-8 connects to a computer over USB for audio and MIDI, including MIDI clock and full parallel outputs. It also has stereo mix outputs, two assignable analog outputs, stereo external inputs and a headphone jack. It is powered by an AC adaptor.
