The WH-1000XM3 is a closed over-ear wireless headphone built around the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1, which handles noise cancelling separately from audio processing. It adjusts cancelling to air pressure at altitude and to the wearer's head shape, glasses and hair, and the Adaptive Sound Control feature changes ambient sound settings depending on whether the user is travelling, walking or waiting.
Sound comes from 40mm drivers with liquid crystal polymer diaphragms. LDAC lets Bluetooth carry high-resolution audio at up to 990 kbps, and DSEE HX upscales compressed files. The Sony | Headphones Connect app provides an equaliser, ambient sound control, virtual surround and sound position control. Quick Attention lowers the volume when a hand is placed over the right housing for quick conversation.
The headphones connect over Bluetooth with NFC pairing, or by cable through a stereo mini jack. A touch panel handles track, volume and call control, and a voice assistant (Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri) is a long press away. Battery life is up to 30 hours, the ear cups swivel to fold into the supplied case, and a USB Type-C cable is included for charging.
