Songbird High is a high-output moving coil cartridge that lets owners of MM phono stages use an MC design without a step-up device. It belongs to the maker's Reference series of open-body cartridges, in which internal resonance is damped inside the generator and the rest is passed through a bonded PEEK mounting plate and a stiff alloy headblock into the tonearm.
The generator uses pure metals, including high-purity copper coils, and a reinforced aluminum pipe cantilever of 0.5 mm diameter carries an elliptical 0.3 x 0.7 mil stylus. Output is 2.5 mV, internal impedance is 135 Ω and the recommended tracking force is 2.0 g. The cartridge weighs 7.4 g.
The stylus is not user-replaceable. Worn cartridges are serviced through a re-tip exchange via a dealer, and the maker's trade-in discount applies to US customers only. Each cartridge is hand-assembled by Excel Sound in Yokohama, Japan.
